Abstract

373,469. Vehicle brakes. CANTWELL, D., Police Station, Tully, North Queensland, Australia. July 14, 1931, No. 20192. Convention date, July 23, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] The brakes of sugar-cane train trucks are automatically applied by a spring upon slackening of the coupling as when the vehicle is stationary or is descending a hill and are released by the tractive effort on the coupling. The brake may also be released by the inward movement of the buffer when backing and by a hand-lever. A lever A is connected to brake blocks C, D by links F, G and by a rod B to the coupling L. When there is no pull on the coupling it swings downwardly and the brake shoes are applied by a spring E connected to the lever A. Inward movement of the buffer Z actuates the lever A to release the brake through a link U<2> and a lever U pivoted on a rod U<1>. To render the doupling ineffective for taking off the brake, the end of the rod B is enlarged in such a manner that it cannot pass through the horizontal part of a right-angled slot A<1> in the lever A but can pass freely through the vertical part of the slot towards which it can be drawn against the action of a spring I by connections P, S<1> and a hand-lever at the end of the truck. When this has been done the brakes can be put on and off by operating either of two interconnected levers Q, R, connected to the lever A by the link V<2>.
