386,123. Non-automatic couplings for railway vehicles. LAW, J., 5, Bright Street, Ferry Hill, Aberdeen. Jan. 19, 1932, No. 1526. [Class 103 (v).] Relates to non- automatic couplings for railway vehicles of the kind in which two links a, b rulejointed together are mounted on one vehicle and adapted to be engaged with the hook on an opposing vehicle. According to the invention an operating- lever or lifting-member e, preferably actuated from the cab of the locomotive, is provided with suitable projections g, j adapted to engage with projecting lugs c on the link b so as to effect the coupling and uncoupling operations whether the buffers of the vehicle are in contact or are separated. If the buffers are initially separated, the rear end e<1> of the lever e is engaged by the actuating member l and the links a, b are raised directly, positioned as in Fig. 2, to a point above the horizontal and then, after the vehicles have been shunted together, are allowed to drop on to the hook. If the buffers are initially in contact, the lever e is swung to the position shown in Fig. 2, then dropped slightly to the position shown in Fig. 3 to tilt the link b upwards, then raised again until, as shown in Fig. 4, the projections j engage the lugs c and swing the link b down on to the hook.
