Abstract

355,247. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., Deptford, London.-(Richards, W. F. ; 66, Tyler Street, Depew, New York, U.S.A.) May 19, 1930, No. 15330. [Class 103 (v).] In an automatic knuckle coupling .for railway &c. vehicles of the kind in which the lock member 13, Fig. 2, is elevated for uncoupling purposes by means of a toggle linkage 36, 39 operated by a transverse shaft 10 extending to the side of the vehicle, the link 36 immediately associated with the block is provided with an extension 44 adapted to engage a shoulder 35 on the coupler head 2 so as to prevent accidental upward jumping of the lock from its locking position. The link 36 is provided with an inclined slot 43 through which passes a pin 41 on the lock 13 with the result that, at the commencement of the clockwise or unlocking rotation of the shaft 10, the link 36 is moved slightly in an anticlockwise direction, thereby allowing the extension 44 freely to pass the shoulder 35. Continued rotation of the shaft 10 effects the usual steps in the operation of the coupling, viz. raising the lock 13 to an intermediate or lock-set position in which its feet 37 rest on a ledge 52, then, on further raising of the lock, actuating a pivoted knuckle opener 49, Fig. 1, and finally, on releasing the shaft 10, allowing the lock to seat itself on the tail 19 of the knuckle 3. In its extreme dropped position the feet 37 of the lock rest on the hub 38 of the lever 39, and the lever 36 abuts against a surface 56 lying between bifurcations of the lever 39. The knuckle pivot pin 4 is relieved from excessive draught strains by the provision on the tail of the knuckle of shoulders 21, 22, Fig. 10, co-operating with projections 25, 26 on the coupler head 1, buffing shocks are partly absorbed by curved lugs 16, 17 on the head, while lateral strains are taken by the engagement of shoulders 29, 30 on the knuckle with corresponding shoulders 31 on the coupler head. Specification 317,543, [Class 103 (v), Railway &c. vehicles, Draught &c. appliances for], is referred to.
