Abstract

384,560. Automatic couplings for railway and like vehicles. KRUPP AKT.-GES., F., Essen, Germany. May 20, 1932, No. 14306. Convention date, June 9, 1931. [Class 103 (v).] In automatic central buffer couplings of the type comprising two coupling heads each of which has a rigid jaw, a recess behind the jaw and a locking pawl, the pawl is mounted so that when draught forces are transmitted through the coupling, thrust is transmitted through the pawl and opposes the bending stress to which the jaw is subjected. Each coupling head A, A<1> is provided with a rigid jaw a<13>, a recess a<2> situated behind the jaw, guiding horns C and frontal contacting surfaces a<3>, a<4>. Each head A, A<1> is provided with a locking pawl D pivoted at E in such a way that thrust on it is not transmitted to the pivot pin but directly to the head A or A<1>. The pawl D is spring pressed by a spring F and is also provided with a locking spring G. The locking pawl is unlocked by means of a lever H pivoted at h<2> and engaging the pawl by means of a pin h<1> . The locking pawl in locking position projects through an opening a<6> and contacts by means of its concentric face d<1> with the edge of a recess a<7> in the opposing head so that when a draught force is applied to the heads a thrust is obtained through the locking pawl which thrust opposes the bending stress on the jaw a<13>. The locking pawls are interconnected when the heads are connected by transmission elements M. The pawls are returned to wholly or partially retracted positions by means of the lever H and the engagement of the spring G against the face a4 of the opposing head or behind an abutment in its own head. The locking spring G and the lever are provided with interconnected cords K<1>, K<2>. In a modification, the pawls P are provided with a concentric portion p<1> and a cam portion p<2> the latter of which during engagement or disengagement of the heads causes the pawls to retract. The pawls are released or locked by a lever R provided with two noses r<1>, r<2> adapted to engage alternatively with an abutment a<14> on a plate a<15>. The lever R is provided with a handle r<3> and is acted upon by a spring S.
