Abstract
204,836. Boonzaier, W. G. Aug. 16, 1922. Couplings, automatic.-An automatic coupling for railway and other vehicles comprises a coupling head having forwardly projecting arms forming between them a buffer recess, one arm constituting a guide member and carrying a toothed pinion adapted to engage a similar pinion on the opposed coupling member, with means, such as a pawl, for holding the pinion in its locking position. Each coupling head 1 comprises a guiding jaw 1<a> and a buffing jaw 1<b> in which is mounted vertically a long pinion 5 the teeth of which are engaged by a ratchet 6. The head 1 is pivotally mounted on a bolt 4 secured by a key in the draw-rod 2 and is centred by a spring 13, fixed to the head of the bolt 4 and engaged between stops on the underside of the coupling head. The ratchet 6 is controlled by a spring 8 or by a weighted lever and is disengaged from the pinion 5 by means of a chain or rope 9 attached to a handle at the side of the vehicle. In a modification the ratchet 6 works on teeth of smaller pitch cut in the centre of the length of the pinion 5 to permit finer adjustment of the coupling when locked. In a further modification, Fig. 8, a hook 20 pivoted at 21 in the coupling head replaces the pinion 5. The hook projects into the jaw of the coupling by means of a spring 22, its forward movement being limited by a stop 23.
