Abstract

370,434. Scotch blocks. GES. FUR OBERBAUFORSCHUNG UND RANGIERTECHNIK, EUROPHAUS AM ANHALTER BAHNHOF, Berlin.-(Assignees of Dietrich, J.; 17, Breitbrunnerstrasse, Munich, Germany.) Jan. 2, 1931, No. 250. Convention date, Jan. 3, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] A disengaging scotch block comprises a wedge b bearing against a vehicle wheel and carried 'by a link z pivotally mounted on a base a which remains on the rail when the wedge moves laterally out of locking ,engagement. The rope h connectedto the lock e is pulled to disengage the scotch block. The friction of the sliding piece c on the side rail d, after it is free from the lock e brings about the lateral movement of the wedge by means of the link f as the whole scotch block is carried forward by the wheel to be braked. The conicity of the wheel assists the disengagement. The toothed bar g increases the grip of the piece c. The block b is replaced by drawing back the block by means of the rope h until a nose-piece i strikes a stop k which pushes the sliding piece c forward. The rope h is wound up by a spring drum or an electric winch. Brackets y of the base a slide on the guide rail d. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the side rail is dispensed with and the scotch block is held in equilibrium by counterweights on the lug l. The wedge p is deflected by the turning of a spiral body q bearing against the rail head. The body q is keyed on the axis of a double rope pulley p round which a rope o is wound and also a resetting rope s. To disengage the block the rope o is pulled and the body q is turned as the scotch block is carried forward by the vehicle wheel. The wedge b is carried by a lever z which rotates about a pin which also acts as a rope guide. When the pull on the rope o is released a spiral spring rotates the body q back to braking position in which a catch m engages a projection n on the base a to keep the block in readiness for braking. The body q may be roughened or have teeth where it engages the rail. A guide rail may be provided for this modification.
