Abstract

464,384. Flexible towing-connections; winches. DOORNE, H. J. VAN. Sept. 28, 1936, No. 26298. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1935. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v)] In a tractor used particularly for moving heavy ordnance, which may be coupled directly thereto so that the tractor and gun &c. move forward together, or wherein the tractor remains stationary with locked wheels and draws the gun &c. towards itself by means of a winch and cable, the draw hook 10 which is used to couple the gun &c. directly to the tractor is secured to the end of the winch cable so that after the gun &c. has been drawn up to the tractor, the latter and the gun &c. may move forward together without any further coupling means having to be actuated. The cable 8 and hook 10 are secured to a conical block 12 seated in a conical socket 14 in the tractor when the tractor and gun &c. are directly coupled. The block 12 is locked by a pawl 18 which is raised into engagement with the neck 21 of the conical member by the counterclockwise rotation of a lever 31 which may be operated from a point near the driver's seat through a rod or cable connection. The winch cable may be paid out when the pawl is unlocked ; as the conical member recedes, a pin 23 is projected axially through the part 14 by a spring 22 and the head 24 of the pin engages the enlarged portion 26 of a keyhole slot 26a to hold the pawl in the disengaged position. As the cable is drawn on to the winch 4, a projection 27 on the conical member 12 contacts with the pin and moves it axially so that the pawl may again be moved to locking position.
