Abstract
388,628. Couplings for vehicles. WEIK, (nee KUHLMANN), E., 18, Himmelstrasse, Hamburg, Germany. June 13, 1932, No. 16671. [Class 79 (iii).] A trailer coupling-rod f is slidably housed in a sleeve h pivoted to a plate d on the tractor frame by a bolt g which passes through a longitudinal slot k in the rod. The baseplate d is positioned by a ridge e and secured to frame cross members b, c. The sleeve h is integral with a bearing plate l. A cushioning thrust block o within the rod is retained clear of the side walls by means of pins q on face-plates m, n, and is located between the pivot pin and an end block t, the plate m bearing against an annular ridge r and the assemblage being secured by a threaded closure member s. A vertical bolt v, mounted on the baseplate, is adapted to drop into a cavity in the end block t when the coupling rod is in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, being normally urged downwards by a spring acting on a bell-crank lever x, y adapted to be withdrawn by a cable a<1>. When the bolt v is raised, the rod f is free to swing and slide to facilitate coupling. When the rod swings into alignment under the tractive pull, the bolt v drops into the socket, locking the rod against angular movement and then serving to take thrusts due to over-running &c. whilst the pivot bolt g takes the normal tractive pull.
