Abstract

442,723. Automatic couplings for railway &c. vehicles. KRUPP AKT.-GES., F., Essen, Germany. Oct. 18, 1935, No. 28814. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1934. [Class 103 (v)] Relates to automatic couplings for railway &c. vehicles of the rigid jaw type in which the heads 1 are maintained in the coupled position by means of locking members 3 associated with a releasing gear 9, 12, both parts being influenced by a spring 7 and adapted to assume three positions, viz., a coupling position, a disengaged position, and a buffer or shunting position. According to the invention, when the coupling is in the disengaged position, Fig. 2, the spring 7 influences the releasing gear in a sense which tends to bring the locking member into the coupling position (Fig. 1, not shown), while, when the coupling is in the buffer position, Fig. 3, the spring is arranged to act upon the releasing gear in the reverse sense. The spring 7 is guided by a rod 6 pivoted to the hinged locking-pawl 3 and bears against a hinged lever 8, the free end of which contacts with one arm 10 of a cam lever 10, 12 fixed to the releasing lever 9. The other arm 12 is adapted to actuate the locking-pawl 3 through the medium of a lug 13 in the pawl which, near its extremity, is provided with a notch 14. In effecting a coupling, the pawl 3 is pressed backwards against the action of the spring 7, and then springs forwards again into a recess 4 on the opposed head to maintain the coupling. The pawl is released from this position and brought to its disengaged position, Fig. 2, by rotating the lever 9, the end of the arm 12 of the cam lever entering the notch 14. In the actual separation of the heads from this position, the pawls 3 are pushed further inwards, the arm 12 is released from the notch 14, and the spring 7 restores the lever 9 and pawl 3 to the coupling position. By rotating the lever 9 beyond the disengaged position, Fig. 2, the pawl 3 may be withdrawn entirely into its recess, the arm 12 may bear against the end of the lug 13, Fig. 3, and the lever 8 may press upon the arm 10 of the cam lever so as to prevent any tendency of the parts to be accidentally disengaged from such buffer or shunting position.
