10,709. Cloud, J. W. April 30. Couplings, automatic, for vehicles having the usual side buffers. Each coupling-head comprises a forked member, one arm of each fork being provided with locking-mechanism adapted to assume more than one locking position as the vehicles come together. The fork arms are in the form of a tongue 6 having a recess in which is pivoted a locking-lever 10, and a guide 7 having shoulders 21, 22 adapted to be engaged successively by a projection 11 on the lever 10. Each lever 10 is normally held by a spring 13 in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which the shoulder 18 of a vertical locking-pin 15 rests on a projection 19 on the lever. Inclined faces 8, 9 on the tongue 6 and guide 7 respectively serve to guide the members into alinement for coupling, whereupon, as the vehicles move nearer together, each guide 7 acts successively upon projections 12<1>, 12 on the lever 10 on the opposing coupling-head to move the lever into its first and second coupled positions. In the first coupled position, the shoulder 18 rests on the upper face of the lever 10 as shown in Fig. 7. In the second coupled position, in which the side buffers are compressed, the pin engages in a recess 20 in the lever. Couplings, automatic, convertible to non- automatic.-A chain or rod attached to the coupling-head at the inner end of the fork carries links for non-automatic coupling with an ordinary draw-hook.
