Couplings, automatic.-Couplings such as are described in Specification No. 588, A.D. 1900, are arranged so as to provide a double coupling and to be uncoupled from either side of the wagon or other vehicle. In each draw-head, the link l is held in a horizontal position by means of a guide c consisting of a sphere free to slide on a vertical pin and having horizontal grooves in which the sides of the link can slide, a spring q being provided to keep the link extended. When two vehicles come together, each link pushes back and engages with a swinging pin k, the lower end of which abuts on the upper extremity of a swinging catch j. For uncoupling, the catch j is turned so that its upper end releases the pin k, which is thus left free to swing outwards as the vehicles separate. The turning of the catch j is effected by a bellcrank lever p operated by a crank on a cross-shaft m, which can be rotated by a handle at either side of the vehicle. The crank may be held up by a catch m<4> to permit of shunting without coupling. The draw-head may act as a central buffer if a spring be fitted between it and the headstock.
