Abstract
8383. Eaton, G. H. April 10. Field carriages. -Relates to an automatic coupling of the Janney type which may be applied to gun carriages and which is adapted for attachment to existing draw-bars and for use with ordinary chain couplings. The coupling - knuckle B, which is pressed towards the open position by a spring F, Fig. 2, is provided with a tail 3 and lugs 1, 2, these lugs being adapted to engage with a locking- tumbler C having lugs 1<A>, 2<A>, 3<A>, the last of which engages with a vertically sliding pin D which has a rounded base. When the knuckle B is set in the open position for coupling, the pin D rests upon the lug 3<A>, but becomes released as the tumbler C is rotated by the lug 2 of the knuckle during coupling. For uncoupling, the pin D may be raised from the side of the vehicle by an arm G or a chain, whereupon the knuckle is free to swing open under the influence of the spring F. For non- automatic coupling, a link E mounted on a pivot in the coupler head is provided. The Provisional Specification states also that the vehicles may be uncoupled from the platform or driver's seat. The coupling is provided with a hollow shank which may be connected to existing draw-bars after the ordinary draw-hook has been cut off, such connexion comprising a pin N, Fig. 5, which . passes through the shank A and works in a slot in the end of the draw-bar M, a spring H being fitted between the inner end of the shank A and a fixed bracket J for absorbing shocks. Wearing plates K, L are fitted upon the headstock.
