CHARLES o. MYERS, oF RoILINe SPRINGS, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-COUPLING.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,675, dated May 30, 18u93.
Application inea rame 15,1893. serial No.46a4s3. '(Nomodei.) f
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES vO. MYERS, a citizenof the United States, residing at Boil ing Springs, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain u new and usefulA Improvements in Oar-Couplin gs, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates toman improvement in car couplings` of the pin-andlinktype,`and
the special features herein set forth, are designed as improvements on the'deviee described in the patent granted to Ine' January 6, 1885,'and numbered 310,535.A
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section through my coupler. Fig. 2, is a top plan of the same, and Y Fig. 3, is a front elevation.
-This coupler uses two links and two pins. Referring to` the drawings, the letter, A
the'same firmly against the pin, W, thus holding the inner end of the said link from tilting up, and consequently preventing the outer` end from tilting down, so that it may register with the draw-head of the other car, when the two are brought together.
The link, D, isnot designed inloperation to l be freed from the coupler by withdrawing the pin, W, but always remains secured to the same draw-head, and is only released therefrom when it is desired to change the link.
The forward end of the link, D, is engaged by an uncoupling pin in the connected drawdesignates parts of the car-body to which the draw-head is applied; B, the movable draw-L vhead having the flaring mouth shown at, C.y
head of the other car,l corresponding to the un'coupling pin, F, shown, which engages the link D', of said draw-headindicated by broken lines. if f v l The operation of .the levers,.G; springs, k,
and pin, F, are detailed in my former patent;y
above referred to, but in thepresent instance I have added the rod', G', which co-acts with these parts, and enables one to operate the unl coupling pin, F, from' the'top of the ca r if desired. f
lSecured to the rearend of the draw-headvis. i
the yoke, N, through which the rod M, passes centrally, being secured at its ends. Com-l pression springs, m, are mounted on said rod u u n and abut at lthe forward end against the trans- A 1 jverse bar, n, which 'isv securedrxgldly to thev v v car, and at the rear end to the block, n', which is-movablewiththedraw-head.` Thesespringsv 6s,
aredesigned to relieve-the car of the strain of any sudden jerk or pull whichv maybe given on the coupler. J
Having thus described my inventiomll i claim as'new and* desire to secure by Letters" 'u kIn a ear-coupling comprising two` over-lap-z Patent-"- ping coupling-links, the combination of the draw-head having two coupling-pin holes. y one in front of the other; the ,frontv coupling l. y
pin, F, for engagement with a link of theop- Aposite draw-head; a rear coupling-pinW permanently engaging an end of theother'coupling-link; acompression spring within the draw-head, and a slidingfolloweractuated lby the said spring, and having in its front face a recess, h, always in engagement `with the end of that coupling-link which the rear coupling pin, W, engages, substantially as described.
. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
CHARLES O. MYERS. Witnesses:
