GAR COUPLING.
No. 414.268; Patented Nov. 5, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES TIMMS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE TIMMS AUTOMATIC OAR COUPLER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,268, dated November 5, 1889.
Application filed August 26, 1889. Serial No. 821,948. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES TIMMs, of Col umbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers; and it consists in certain fea tures of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective. Fig. 3 is a detail of arm E.
A represents the draw-head,tl1e same being chambered to receive lever B, these members being pivotally connected by a vertical pin 0. This lever, or so-called knuckle, is of the curved variety shown, the free end or head 13 thereof constituting a hook adapted to engage a similar head of an opposing coupler in coupling the cars.
D is the catch for holding the knuckle in the closed position, and for the present purpose it is not considered necessary to give anyfurther detailed description of these members, as this class of couplers is well known, and as the peculiar features of this particular coupler have already been the subject of application for United States Letters Patent. Head B has a horizontal recess 1), adapted to receive an ordinary link, and heretofore this head has been provided with a large vertical hole for receiving a coupling-pin with which to secure such link in coupling cars where it is necessary to use the oldstyle link. Such large hole in head B" weakened the same to such an extent that the head was liable to break with the rough usage incident to car-couplers. To obviate this difficulty, I provide lateral arms E E, secured to pin 0 next above and below the draw-head, so that these arms will turn with the pin, these arms having vertical holes (2 that register with each other for receiving a coupling-pin E for securing link F when it is necessary to use such link for coupling the cars. The draft on link F draws pin E against the inner face of head B, and hence the whole strength of this head is utilized for the purpose, and of course it is unnecessary to make a hole through this head for a coupling-pin. \Vhen arms E are not in use, they may be turned back out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2, in which position they do not interfere in the least with the operation of the automatic coupler. Arms E are extended, as shown at 6, far enough to be engaged and snubbed back by the knuckle of an opposing coupler in coupling the cars. Vhen it is necessary to use these arms, they are turned forward by hand.
That I claim is 1. In a car-coupler, the combination, with draw-head, knuckle, and pivotal pin connecting these members, of lateral arms mounted 011 such pivotal pin, such arms having vertical holes for receiving a coupling-pin, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination, with draw-head, knuckle, and pivotal pin, of lat eral arms mounted on such pin and connected therewith so as to turn with the pin, such arms having holes that register with each other for receiving a coupling-pin, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with draw head, knuckle, and pivotal pin, of lateral arms rigidly mounted on such pin above and below the draw-head, such arms having vertical holes for receiving a coupling-pin in position for such coupling-pin to draw against the inner face of the knuckle, substantially as set forth,
4. In a car-coupler, the combination, with draw-head, kn uckle, and pivotal pin connecting such members, such knuckle having a recess adapted to receive a link, of lateral arms rigidly connected with such pivotal pin and located, respectively, above and below the draw-h ead, such arms having holes for receiving the coupling pin in position to draw against the inner face of the knuckle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of June, 1889.
JAMES TIMMS.
