UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT R. WILSON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO W. H. BOFINGER AND ARTHUR BURBANK, OF SAME PLACE.
lCAR-COU PLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,729, dated J' uly'26, 1892.
Application filed March 14, 1892.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT REDDINGTON WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Oar-Coupler; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich which it appcrtains to make and use the same. A
My invention relates to an improvement in a car-coupler, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the objects of myinvention are to provide a car-coupler that couples under the draw-bar and at the same time prevents the pin from becoming disengaged from the draw-bar when cars are uncoupled. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional side view. Fig. 2 is a sectional front view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the two views.
In the drawings, A designates a car; B, the draw-bars; C, the dead-Wood; D, a link; E, a pin attached to a lever F, the latter having a weight G on end of the same, which acts as a counter-balance.
H are guide-hangers, which are placed in position in such a manner as to guide and limit the movement of the lever F, so that the end of the pin cannot be withdrawn entirely from draw-bar as weighted end of lever is raised.
K designates a rope or rod for raising or lowering lever F.
In practice the ordinary pin, link, and drawbar are used; but by use of a lever the pin is inserted'from the bottom of the draw-head and the cars are coupled automatically by simply releasing rope or rod K and allowing weighted end of lever F to descend to the position shown in Fig. 1. Should it be desired to uncouple cars, the weighted end of lever F is raised by means of rope or rod either from side or top.V
Serial No. 424,860 (No model.)
A striking advantage of my invention is its economical construction, requiring no change in the ordinary pin-and-link coupler, except to insert the pin within the link from the bottom of the draw-head.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into elfect, I would say in conclusion that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown in illustration, as the same may be varied to some extent; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a car coupler substantially as described, the combination, with the draw-head having aligned apertures in its top and bottom walls adjacent to its mouth, of a lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point in its length beneath the draw-head and carrying the weight at its rear end, the pin connected to and carried bythe forward end of the lever and adapted to play through the aligned apertures in the draw-head, and a suitable means for raising and lowering the weighted end of the lever, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car coupler substantially as described, the combination, with the draw-head having aligned apertures in its top and bottom Walls adjacent to its mouth, of a lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point in its length beneath the draw-head and carrying the weight at its rear end, the pin connected to and carried by the forward end of the lever r and adapted to play through the aligned apertures in the draw-head, the guide-hangers I-I for guiding and limiting the movements of the lever, and a suitable means for raising and lowering the weighted end of said lever, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT R. WILSON.
