GEORGE REED ROGERS, OF PARKERSBURG, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO GEORGE S. HARNEY.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,259dated February 24, 1891.
Application iiled July 8,1890. Serial No. 358,050. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE REED ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My'invention relates to certain new and useful ,improvements in car-couplers and the nature of the invention will be understood from the following descriptiomwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section through two draw-heads, and Figs. 2 and 3 views in detail of my improved combined link and coupling-pin.
In the drawings, A A represent the drawheads provided with the ordinary flaring mouth-pieces, the upper inner face of each draw-head being formed with inclines ct, upon which the links ride as they enter the draw head.
B B represent my improved links. Each such link is provided with a toggle O at one end, formed, preferably, at an angle of about thirty or forty degrees to the link. This toggle O serves as a coupling-pin, the toggle of one link engaging the link of the next car. Horizont-ally through such toggle I bore an opening b, through which a short shaft c is passed, said shaft havingv bearings in the side walls of the draw-head at a point near the forward end thereof, the position of the parts being such that the link will be pivoted in the expanded mouth of the draw-head. The normal position of the link is that shown in full lines in Fig. l, wherein the link is shown as occupying a vertical position, with its end depending below thel draw-head, the toggle O of each link being directly in line with the mouth of the Idraw-head, its upper end (which is notched, as at d) resting against link, which will be thereb5T forced back until the end of the link has passed over it, after which it will by its Own weight return to its normal position, thus coupling the cars, the
link thus coupled resting on shoulders f,`
formed upon the toggle.
TO raise the link to a proper angle to accomplish the coupling as above described, and also to uncouple the cars without the necessity of the train-hand entering between the cars, mechanism is provided, two ways of accomplishing this end being shown. In one case I form the opening b in the toggle in an oval form, making its shaft also oval, and providing such shaft with a crank-arm f', the shaft extending beyond the side of the car. In the second case I connect the toggle by means of a link g with a bar h, such bar at its rear end being connected with a shaft fi, this shaft being provided with a crank-arm j. Connected with shaft z' by link 7o is a bar Z, carryingl at its rear end a spring on, which abuts against a cross-beam n and a shoulder o on the bar, this spring serving to return the parts to their normal position.
To uncouple the cars, that link the toggle of which is in use is turned until the link coupled to it can be withdrawn.
The combination of the draw-head, the combined link and pin, the rock-shaft t', bar h, link g, rod Z, spring m, and link k, all arranged and operating substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE REED ROGERS. Witnesses:
JAMES F. HAENEY, GEORGE S. I-IAENEY.
