of which the following is such a full, clear,
and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a releasing device for ar couplers and more particularly to a connection adapted to extend between the end of the operating rod and the coupler pin, whereby the standard form of operating rod and locking pin may be used. This connection takes the place of the usual chain connection heretofore in use.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate some forms of releasing device made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my preferred form; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of some of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation; Fig. 4'. is a detailed view of some of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but showing the pin in raised position. Fig. 7 is detailed view of some of the parts shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are detailed views showing a modified form of my device, and Figs. 11, 12 and 13 are detailed views showing a stillfurther modification.
Like marks of reference have referred to similar parts in the several views of the drawings.
20 represents the body of a car to which my device is to be applied. 21 isan operating rod carried in a bearing 22 secured to the end of the car, and a bearing 23 secured to upper face of the striking block 2 The rod 21 is provided with a handle 25 and with a projecting end having a flattened portion 27 in which is formed a horizontal aperture 28 as best shown in Fig. 2. 29 is the draw-head provided with a locking pin 30 having a horizontal aperture 31. All of the above parts are of the usual well known construction. 1
It has been usual heretofore to connect the projecting end of the bar 26 to the eye 31 of the locking pin by means of a short chain. It has been found, however, that the chain is liable to become kinked so as to render the entire device inoperative.
The object of my present invention is to provide a connection which can be rapidly applied to the present form of operating rod and pin without any cl'iange whatever.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 7, a member 33 is provided having a stud adapted to project through the horizontal opening 23 in the flattened end 27 of the projecting end 26 of the operating rod. This stud 3i is provided with a shoulder adapted to limit the movement of the nut 36 which holds member 33 in position so as to insure thefree pivotal movement of said member of the opening 28. The member 33 has formed in it a vertical aperture 37 best shown in Fig. 4. This aperture 37 is preferably flared at both sides as shown in dotted-lines in said figure. The pivotal movement of the member 33 in the openin 28, together with the flared form of the opening 37, which is somewhat larger than the body of the link 33, allows the link to have a universal movement with respect to the bar 26. Passing through aperture 37 is a link 38 having on its end a head 39, and on its lower end a loop i0, preferably open, which is adapted to engage with the opening 31 in the locking pin 30.
The operation of the device will be evident. When the parts are in a normal position. they will appear as shown best in Fig. lV hen the draw-head 29 is moved back and forward relative to the car, the pivotal movement of the member 33 in the aperture 28 will allow the pin 38 to assume a suitably inclined position. It will be understood that the length of the pin 38 is such as to allow it to assume the various inclined positions without bringing the head 39 into contact with the upper face of the member lVhen, however, the handle 29 is moved outwardly as shown in ii, the projecting end 26 will move upwardly and cause theupper face of the member 33 to engage with the head 39 of the link 38. and thus raise the locking pin 30 as shown in said Fig' (5.
In Figs. 8, 9 and 10, l have shown a slight modification in which a member 42 is used in place of the member before described. This member 42 projects forwardly from the end of the rod 26 instead of laterally and is secured in position by an ordinary bolt 4-3 and nut lsl. Inasmuch as this member embraces both sides of the flattened end, it may be used without causing binding of the parts. The member 42 has a vertical aperture or slot 46 through which passes a link 47, which is similar to the link 38 here tofore described and is provided at its lower end with an open loop a0 like that above described. The head of the link 47 differs from the head of the link 38 in consisting of a single straight piece 49 adapted to engage with the two sides of the slot -16.
In Figs. 11, 12 and 13, I have shown a still further modification in which a member 50 is used which is somewhat similar to 42 as herein described and like it is secured in position by means of a bolt 43 and nut l-l. The member 50 instead of being provided with a slot 46 is provided with vertical aperture 51. This vertical aperture 51 engages 'with one side of a loop formed on the upper end of a link, 53, similar to links 38 and i7 hereinbefore referred to, and like them provided with an open loop on its lower end engaging with the eye 31 of the locking pin.
In both the above described modifications the operation will be substantially the same as described in connection with the form shown in Figs. 1 to 7. All these forms may be applied directly to the present form of operating parts. l urthermore in all the forms means are provided for preventing the disengagement of the link and connecting rod even when the extreme limit of travel is reached by the draw bar.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. In a releasing device for car couplers, the combination with an operating rod having a forwardly projecting end, of a member attached to said end and projecting therefrom in a substantially horizontal di rection, a locking pin, and a link engaging with said locking pin and having sliding connection with said member.
2. In a releasing device for car couplers, the combination with'an operating rod, of a locking pin, a member pivoted to said rod to turn on an axis substantially at .right angles to the length of the draw bar, and a link engaging with said locking pin and having a sliding connection with said member. v
3. In a releasing device for car couplers, the combination with an operating rod having a forwardly projecting end provided with a substantially horizontal opening, of a locking pin, a member pivotally carried in said opening, and a link engaging with said pin and having sliding connection with said member permitting movement in an upward direction, said link being free to extend above said 'rod.
4. In a releasing device for car couplers, the combination with an operating rod having a forwardly projecting end provided with a substantially horizontal opening of a locking pin, a member pivoted in said opening to turn on an axis substantially at right angles to the length of the draw bar,
said member having an upwardly extending length of the draw bar, said member projecting laterally from said rod in a substantially horizontal direction, and being provided with an upwardly extending aperture, a locking pin, and a link passing through said aperture and engaging with the locking pin, said link being free to extend above said rod.
6. In a releasing device for car couplers, the combination with an operating rod having a horizontally extending aperture, of a locking pin, a member pivotally mounted in said aperture to project laterally from said rod, and a link connecting said member and locking pin.
7. In a releasing device for car couplers, the combination with an operating rod having a horizontally extending aperture, of a locking pin, a member mounted in the aperture to project laterally from said rod, said member having an upwardly extending aperture, and a link passing through said latter aperture and engaging with said looking pin.
b. In a releasing device for car couplers the combination with an operating rod pro vided with an aperture, of a locking pin, a
threaded member passing through said aperture, a nut engaging said threaded member, means for preventing said nut from binding said rod, and a link engaging said locking pin and having sliding connection with said member.
