UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ABNER JUDSON MCGEHEE, OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF- AND HENRY V. MOOORRY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,282, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed January 23, 1889. Serial No. 297,267. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LABNER JUDsoNMcGEHEE, of Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupler, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of one-half of the coupler. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line a; 00 in Fig. 1,and Fig. 4 is a front end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in all the views.
The object of the invention. is to provide a simple and effective car-coupler which will operate automatically and will not be liable to become accidentally uncoupled.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Upon the outer end of the draw-bar A is formed a head, B, provided with arms a Z),
arranged approximately parallel with each other. To the arm I) is pivoted a jaw, 0, carrying arms 0 (1, arranged at right angles to the jaw and capable of sliding over the up- 0 per and lower faces of the arm I). The arm b is provided on its upper face with a stop, 6, and on its lower face with a stop, f, also on its inner face with the vertical shoulder a and v on its outer face with the vertical shoulder 0, 5 said shoulders being designed to limit the outward and inward motions, respectively, of the jaw O. In a hole made through the head B is placed a vertically-sliding bolt, g, having its lower end, h, beveled for engagement with the extremity of the arm (Z, and provided at its upper end with a collar, 2', for engaging the arm 0. v
The extremity of the jaw G is provided with a notch, O, as indicated in dotted lines 5 in Figs. 1 and 2, to receive the ordinary link, and with a vertical aperture, j, for receiving the coupling-pin. The draw-bar is provided with a stop, k, for limiting its inward movement. The end of the arm d is provided with a projection, l, which is received in a recess, m, in the stop fwhen the jaw O is closed, the engagement of the projection with the stop being designed to increase the strength of the coupling.
WVhen the couplers are applied to opposite ends of car, the couplers of adjacent cars are oppositely arranged with respect to each other, and when the cars are brought together the jaw O of the coupler of one car pushes upon the arms 0 d of the coupler of the adjacent car. Thus the couplings of adjacent cars act to mutually close each other.
The closed position of the jaw O is shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. As the arms 0 d swing inward in the operation of coupling, the arm d engages the beveled end it of the bolt g, thereby raising said bolt, carrying the collar 2' upward, so as to allow the arm 0 to pass under it, and after the arm (Z passes beyond'the beveled end it of the bolt g the bolt drops, bringing the beveled end h into engagement with the arm (l, and at the same time allowing the collar 2' to drop in front of the arm 0, thereby holdingthe jaw O in closed position.
To uncouple, the bolt g is raised upward by means of suitable levers so arranged as to operate from the sides and top of the cars when the arms 0 cl pass out of closed position as the adjacent cars separate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The draw-head B, having the arms a Z), the arm-h being provided on its upper face with the stop 6 and on its lower face with the stop f, in combination with the jaw O, pivoted to the arm I) and provided with the arms 0 (Z, and the sliding bolt g, provided with the collar 2', substantially as described.
2. The draw-head B, having the arms a b, the arm b being provided with the stop 6 on its upper face, the recessed stop f m on its lower face, and the shoulder a on its inner face, in combination with the jaw C, pivoted to the arm b and provided with the arm 9 5 0 d, the arm (Z being provided with the projection Z, and the sliding-pin g, having the beveled lower end, 71, and provided with the collar 1' at its upper end, substantially as herein shown and described.
ABNER JUDSON MCGEHEE.
