250,472. McConway & Torley Co., (Assignees of Kelso, W.). Aug. 26, 1925, [Convention date]. Couplings, automatic.-In a coupling 1 of the pivoted knuckle type, the pivot-pin opening 6 in the knuckle 2 is elongated and the pivot-pin openings 7 in the coupler head are circular, or vice versa, so that the knuckle 2 can move longitudinally of the coupler head as well as rotate. The knuckle is also provided with a circularly curved pulling shoulder 10 concentric with the pivot pin 5 when the knuckle is in the closed position, while the head is provided with a. shoulder 11 curved to conform to the pulling shoulder 10 and is adapted to co-operate with the latter when the knuckle is. subjected to draft forces; the knuckle and head are also provided with buffing shoulders 13 and 15 respectively contacting substantially over their whole area in the closed position of the knuckle to receive the buffing forces. The pivot luge 8, may be recessed at 16 on their peripheral faces so as to have overlapping cooperation with, the curved lugs 17 projecting vertically from the opposite ends of the hub 14 of the knuckle, to resist transverse strain incident to draft forces.
