Couplings, automatic.-In a Janney coupling, the knuckle-opening lever 34 is pivoted at 33 and operates in a plane obliquely to the axis of the coupler, and the lock 7 is provided with an inclined ledge 28 which is engaged by a projection 30 on the tail of the knuckle 2 to withdraw the lock from the look-set seat 27 opposite the knuckle when the coupling is being engaged. A recess 31 midway of the length of the lock is provided to facilitate dislodgment from the ledge 27. The inside of the lock 7 houses a lock 11 which prevents the lock from creeping and also operates the knuckle-opening lever 34 by means of its end 23 engaging the and 35 of the knuckleopening lever. The pin 20 of the clevis 36 works in an inclined slot 19 on the lug 18 of the lock 7 and in an horizontal slot 22 in the lug of the lock 11. When the coupling is to be disengaged, the clevis 36 is raised, thereby withdrawing the projection 16 of the lock 11 from under the ledge 17 of the coupler head and then lifting the lock 7 until it engages with the lock-seat 27; the couplings are then free to disengage as the opposing vehicles are drawn apart. In order to set the coupling, the lock 7 is raised until the end 23 of the lock 11 engages the end 35 of the knuckle-opening lever 34 so as to swing the knuckle fully open, the lock 7 is then lowered on to its lock-set seating 27 and the coupler is then free for automatic coupling.
