Abstract

239,770. Soc. Anon. Usines E. Henricot. Nov. 13, 1924, [Convention date]. Couplings, automatic; couplings, automatic, convertible to non-automatic.-In an automatic coupling having a pivoted knuckle, the lock is arranged laterally' relatively to the draw-axis, and the central part of the coupling is provided with a cavity for the reception of an auxiliary transition coupling element arranged substantially in the draw-axis. The knuckle 4 is pivoted to the coupling head at 5 and has a locking-arm 24 and a forward extension 25 which may be in the same plane with the locking-arm, and which is adapted to swing through a slot in the coupler face situated above a recess 36 which houses the end link of a non-automatic coupling. The lock 6, Fig. 10, slides vertically in a cavity 35 and may be operated from above the coupler head by a link 7 or from below by a link 9, the end of the link engaging the lock by means of lugs 11 adapted to slide in an inclined slot 12. The lock is provided with a lock-set seat 22, a bearing-surface 21, Fig. 9, which rests on the locking-arm 24 in the open position of the knuckle and with an upward projection 21' adapted to strike the arm 28 of the knuckle thrower when the lock is raised by the link 7 or 9. In the locked position of the coupling, Fig. 4, the locking-arm 24 engages the lock 6 on an inclined surface 19 and the position of the lock is such that an inclined surface 13 on the link 7 or 9, Fig. 10, slides below an inclined recess 14 in the wall of the coupler and prevents the lock from creeping upwardly under draught. The coupling is unlocked by an upward movement of the link 7 or 9 which moves the inclined surface 13 from under the recess 14 and permits the lock 6 to be raised on to the lock-set seat 22 to allow the locking arm 24 to swing under the lock as the vehicles move apart; a further upward movement of the lock causes the projection 21<1> to strike the arm 28 of the knuckle thrower to swing the knuckle into the open position in readiness for automatic coupling.
