Couplings, automatic.-In an automatic coupling of the Janney type in which a knuckle-block is kept in the closed position by a key, the key is arranged to be raised either from above or below by means of one control member which can occupy two different positions of operation. The knuckle-block 4 is locked by means of a key 6, which is pivoted on a pin 9 in an elongated hole 11 in a rod 8. The rod 8 may either be operated from above the coupler head, as shown in full lines, by means of a rod or chain or may be reversed, as shown in dotted lines, and operated by means of a transverse lever 7. In uncoupling, the rod 8 is pulled or pushed upwards, the pin 9 rides along to the other end of the slot 11 and raises the key 6, which tilts and allows the horns 15 to rest on the ledge 14 of the coupler head, the knuckle-block being then free to open. When the key 6 is further raised a recess engages the end of a lever pivoted to the coupler head, the opposite end of which strikes the end 32 of the knuckle-block and revolves it to the open position. In the coupled position accidental displacement of the key is prevented by the end of the rod 8 being obstructed by a projection 12 on the coupler head.
