Abstract
198,934. Spencer, Moulton, & Co., Ltd., G., and Hine, C. W. C. Aug. 2, 1922. Couplings, automatic.-In an automatic coupling of the kind comprising a hollow coupling head having mounted to rotate within it coupling pin which in its uncoupled position is clear of the open mouth of the coupling head and in its coupled position extends across the mouth so as to engage a coupling hook projecting therein, the coupling pin has fixed to it a lever which, in the uncoupled position, projects forwardly of the coupling head so as to be struck by the coupling head of the opposing vehicle and thereby moved to rotate partially the coupling pin in a direction to effect coupling. The coupling pin 6 is cut away to lie flush with the walls of the casing 1 in the uncoupled position, and the end 11 of the lever 9 connected to the pin 6, projects forwardly of the casing 1 so that, on impact, the lever 9, and with it the pin 6, are revolved partially to engage the projecting end of the reversible double-ended hook 5. The pin 9 is then further revolved by gravity or by a spring to engage the hook completely. The coupling head is supported resiliently in a box-like casing 13 by springs 14 and is capable of rocking in a vertical or horizontal direction relatively to the draw-rod 3. When coupling with a vehicle fitted with an A.B.C. coupler or a link and pin type of coupler the free end of the hook 5 is of link shape.
