Couplings, automatic. -In a knuckle coupling, the knuckle - opener is first used to raise the lock to the lock - set position by a lever action, and is then pulled directly to throw the knuckle. T h e knuckle - opener 16 is attached at one end to the uncoupling-chain 19. and its opposite end is hooked at 17 to engage a downward projection from the knuckle tail 5. The locking - block 8 is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in the locking and lockset positions respectively ; it is provided forwardly with a depending flange 11 and rearwardly with a depending leg 9 having a forward projection 10 which enters a recess 13 in the coupling - head. When the chain 19 is pulled to uncouple, the opener 16 bears against the bevelled underside 20 of the leg 9 and raises the locking-block 8 to the lock-set ledge 15. The knuckle 3, being thereupon pulled open either by a direct pull on the tail 5 through the hook 17 or by the withdrawal of the coupled car, a rib 5<a> on the tail 5 bears against the flange 11 and the lock is pulled off the ledge 15 and rests on the knuckle tail 5 in readiness to drop into the locking position when coupling takes place. The lower end of the knuckle pin 4 rests on a support 24 fitting a dovetail recess in the coupling- head.
