Abstract

9216. Lake, H. H., [Munton, J.]. May 2. Couplings, automatic. -Consists chiefly of means for preventing the locking-pin D from working upward owing to vibration &c. For this purpose, a guard F bearing against the upper wall of the draw-head, and swing- ing round a boss a<4>, and operated by the tail b<1> of the knuckle B, is interposed between the pin D and the tail b<1> when the cars are coupled. The lower end of the pin D is moved forward when raised for uncoupling, so that it may be supported on the projection f<2> of the guard F. On the cars being uncoupled, the pin is returned to its vertical position by the cam surface f<5>, and is supported on the upper surface of the guard F. A hook b<3> on the knuckle engages with a recess in the draw-head in the coupled position, thus giving greater security, and in the uncoupled position prevents the guard F from moving. The pin D is guided into its locking position by the projection f<2> &c., and is prevented from being completely withdrawn by a stop G coacting with slots d<3>, a<9>. A shoulder b<2> on the knuckle engages with a corresponding shoulder f<4> on the guard.
