Abstract
400,130. Railway-vehicle couplings. SKODA WORKS, PLZEN, 37N, Jungmannova, Prague. May 26, 1933, No. 15320. Convention date, May 27, 1932. Addition to 389,656. [Class 103 (v).] In a transition coupling-arrangement as claimed in the parent Specification, the auxiliary coupling 3 that is adapted to couple with the non-automatic hook 4 is linked to the ultimate coupler 1 by means of a separate pivoted member 2 which is so constructed that, in being swung to its operative position, it connects with the head of the ultimate coupler in the same manner as would the head of an opposed ultimate coupler. In the construction shown the intermediate member 2 swings about a vertical axis 10, while the auxiliary coupling 3 hinges about an horizontal pin 5 on the member 2 and in its operative position is supported by the abutment of a spring pin 7 against the claw 8 of the automatic coupling 1. The claw 11 of the member 2 is retained in engagement with the claw 8 by means of a vertical dropping pin 17 which, when raised, permits the member 2 to be swung aside to an inoperative position and the auxiliary coupling 3 to drop into a vertical position. The auxiliary coupling itself comprises a pair of pivoted fingers 12 that are adapted to engage the hook 4 when the latter buffs against lugs 16 integral with the fingers, a bifurcated pivoted pawl 13 dropping into engagement with the outer sides of the fingers 12 to hold them in the coupling position. The auxiliary coupling is released by lifting the pawl 13 through a pull on a chain 9, this chain, in a modification, being also effective in raising and maintaining the auxiliary coupling in its operative position. In order to prevent damage to the parts in case an ultimate coupler should be allowed accidentally to buff against an auxiliary coupling hanging in a vertical position, a flat buffing face may be furnished at a convenient part of the auxiliary coupling.
