Abstract
1080. Paynter, W. L. Jan. 14. Couplings, automatic.-Relates to couplings for railway or road vehicles, of the kind in which a pivoted hook is retained in the set-forcoupling position by a sliding catch which is pushed back by the coupling-bar or link on the vehicle to be coupled to allow the hook to fall into coupling engagement. The hook d, pivoted on a shaft c within a casing a, is retained in its raised position by the engagement of a pin j, carried by the catch e, with a recess k in a rearward extension m of the hook. The catch e, which is pressed forward by a spring o, is guided within the casing by the provision of grooves g to engage corresponding ribs h on the side walls of the casing. A spring r is provided to ensure the falling of the hook when the pin is moved out of the recess k upon impact of the coupling-bar or link on the catch e. Couplings, operating from engine or train.- The hook is lifted for uncoupling by a pin x on a bell-crank lever t operated through a rod v from a lever on the driver's platform, a spring y being provided to hold the pin normally out of engagement with the hook.
