Abstract

28,740. Willison, J., and National Malleable Castings Co. Dec. 12. [Addition to 9622/12.] Couplings, automatic.-Relates to couplings of the kind described in the parent Specification. The improvements comprise (1) the provision of means for retaining the locking-bloct in retracted position during shunting operations, (2) the provision of a lock-set device for retaining the block in retracted position until the vehicles are separated, (3) a modification of the devices for guiding the block, (1) For retracting the block f in uncoupling, a rod l, pivoted at one end to the block, is formed at the other end with an upturned part l<2> against which bears a cranked portion k<2> of a transverse operating - shaft k. During shunting operations, the cranked portion k<2> is left in its rear position in contact with the end l<2> of the retracted rod l. (2) When the shaft k is operated to return the portion k<2> to its forward position, the block is prevented from forward movement until separation of the coupler heads has taken place, by a lock-set member m which is mounted on the outer wall of the coupler head by a slot m<1> engaging a pin n, and is retained against the wall by a projecting guide-piece o. During the retraction of the block f, a projectine portion f<6> of the block moves upwardly the member m, which then drops in front of the projection f<6>, and owing to the contact of the member m with the face d<2> of the opposing head, the return of the block cannot take place until the coupler-heads are separated. (3) The block f is provided upon one side with an inclined rib f<5> adapted to slide between inclined guiding-surfaces g<2>, g<3> within the coupler head, and the projection f<6> is formed with an inclined slot f<10> adapted to engage the portion g<4> of the side wall of the coupler head.
