Abstract
278,822. Whitehouse, H. B. July 24. 1926. Wheel guards, obstruction removers, and safety appliances. -An automatic skid brake and lifting-jack for motor vehicles comprises a lever l carrying a brake shoe m and pivotally suspended beneath the driving axle and adapted to be released into braking operation by a latch f pivoted at g and operated by a resiliently mounted buffer b on the front of the vehicle. The latch f normally engages a trip-lever h connected by a rod or wire j to the lever ! l by adjustable means for instance by a removable pin engageable with one of a. series of holes in the lever. Links p limit the movement of the levers l. This brake may be also associated with the front wheels. The ordinary vehicle brakes and the clutch may be simultaneously operated. The skid brake may be controlled by a hand lever for jacking purposes. The ordinary brake lever may be used to reset the latch and trip-lever mechanism.
