Abstract
277,195. Gasson, T. Nov. 16, 1926. Skid; applied by springs.-In an emergency brake for a. vehicle of the kind comprising a skid plate 1 supported in proximity to the rim of the wheel 2 in such a way that, when released, it first engages the tread of the wheel and is then carried round into contact with the ground, the skidplate is mounted on a member 3 pivotally connected to the swinging arm 5 and a cable or chain 7 is attached at one end to the member 3 or arm 5 and at the other end to a lever 8 engaged by an operating pedal or lever 9, which, when moved in one direction, releases the emergency braking apparatus, and, when moved in the opposite direction, resets the apparatus. As shown, the pedal 9 is held in a normally depressed position with a surrounding spring 11 compressed by a catch 12, which can be moved aside by the driver's foot against the action of a centralizing spring 16 when the brake is to be applied and which automatically re-engages the pedal 9 when the latter is pushed down. If desired, the catch 12 may be connected by a cord 33, Fig. 3, to a number of control levers 35 so that the brake can be applied by the occupants of the vehicle. A spring plunger located in a casing 18 and bearing against the end 21 of a pivoted link 22 connected to the skid plate by a second link 23 accelerates the action of the brake. A supplementary brake, such as a hand brake 26, may be actuated simultaneously with the release of the skid plate.
