Abstract

28,409. Hymns, T. R., and Morgan, E. Dec. 30. Brakes.-An emergency brake for motor and horse-drawn vehicles, which also acts as a means for preventing skidding, comprises two pairs of blocks acting in front of, and behind, or in line with, the rear wheels of the vehicle, the blocks being arranged at an angle to, and at each side of, the longitudinal centre-line of the vehicle. The rear blocks b are carried by the links c and actuated through links e, f by a hand-lever o, or a pedal. The front blocks n are operated through links i, k, l from the same lever o and are stayed by chains q. One or other of the cranks l, f may be disconnected from the shaft g when only one of the brake pairs is required, and provision may be made to enable the brakes to be operated by the conductor at the rear end of the vehicle. The brake blocks are faced with rubber, wood covered by leather, &c., and are adapted to carry the weight of the vehicle when the brake is fully applied, the rear wheels being lifted from the ground. The brake prevents backward movement.
