Abstract

223,025. Stopford, H. Sept. 7, 1923. Skid; force-transmitting mechanism; compensating for wear. - A track or skid brake for vehicles, for use more particularly in emergency, comprises on each side of the vehicle a skid pivoted to a bracket 3 on the axle and connected at 8 by a link 5 to an arm 6 keyed on a crossshaft 7. A rod 9 extends from each pivot 8 to an arm 10 on a cross-shaft 11, the arm 10 on the one side of the vehicle being extended as shown to form a hand-lever. The skids 2 may be of H-section and be faced with a block of rubber or other material 13. By means of the hand lever 10 the skids 2 can be lowered into contact with the ground, causing the rear wheels of the vehicle to be lifted from the ground, the frictional reaction on the members 2 assisting this movement. The members 2 may be further supported by links 16, which straighten out when the brakes are applied, and when the blocks become worn, they may be suspended from additional holes 20 provided in the bracket 3, so that they are brought nearer to the ground. In the event of a tyre bursting or a wheel collapsing, the vehicle is supported by the members 2, which then bear upon stops 18, and hold the wheels with their rims clear of the road surface.
