603,951. Brakes for mine cars. FLOWERS, H. F. Nov. 7, 1945, No. 29618. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXXII] In a mine car supported on opposed independent tandem radial trucks (see Group XXXII) the brake gear comprises a casting 22, Fig. 7, pivoted to the side members 7 at 24 and carrying webs 26 to which brake blocks 27 are fixed, the castings 22 at each end of the body being connected by a transverse bar 21, Figs. 2, and 4, which ties the trucks together for radiating purposes and also forms the means by which the brakes are applied, the bar 21 being pivoted to the casting 22 by a barrel-shaped pin 31 mounted in a cylindrical bush to allow a rocking action relatively to the casting 22. Each bar 21 is connected by a rod 36 to a lever 39 pivoted at 40 to the truck, the levers 39 at each end being connected by a rod 48 extending along the side of the body, one lever being pivoted directly to the rod 48 and the other through a floating triangular plate 42, the apex of this plate being connected by a link 44 to the lower end of a spring-steel brake lever 45, Fig. 4, the upper end of the lever working over a notched gate 47. The brake blocks are kept off the wheel rims by the action of gravity and when the brake lever is actuated the plate 42 is rotated about one of the pivots 41 or 49 depending on which set of brake blocks makes contact first, thereby applying the other set of brakes, the flexible brake lever equalizing the pressure of the shoes on the wheel rims.
