A brake system for trains of rail vehicles, particularly mine trucks, comprises on each car of the train a longitudinal slidable control bar 26 which is urged rearwardly by a compression spring 27 but is prevented from so moving by a latch member 24 pivoted at 22 and engaging a notch 25 in the bar. On one of the cars of the train there is provided on the wheel axle a clutch drum 27 which is engaged by centrifugally operated shoes if the car's speed should become excessive. A lug 20 on the drum 27 is thus caused' to move a lever arm 21 so that the latch member 24 is raised. The bar 26 under the influence of spring 27 thus moves towards the right pivoting, by engagement with a pin 65 an arm 53 so that the hooked extremity of a lever 44 is disengaged from a locking bar 46. Lever arms 39 are thus pivoted about a pin 31 by expansion of compression springs 43 at their upper ends so that the brake shoes 34 at the lower ends engage the rails. The disposition of arms 39 together with parallel links 33 is such that the engagement of the shoe with the rail causes the vehicle to lift and a stop surface 38 to engage the wheel, thus providing effective braking. Movement of the bar 26 on one truck may be communicated by a connecting chain 7 to cause a similar application of the brakes on further trucks in a train. The brake may also be applied manually by a hand lever 70, 71, which through a link 68 having a slotted connection with pin 66 on arm 21, acts also to disengage the latch 24. To reset the mechanism the car is rolled rearwardly to remove the wheels from the stop surface 38, and the bar 26 moved forwardly against the action of springs 27 by a transverse hand lever (not shown).
