514,256. Track brakes. BAVIN, T., and CROOK, A. E. April 26, 1938, No. 12437 [Class 103 (i)] A track brake for vehicles, particularly such which run on inclined tracks comprise a number of brake shoes that are applied to the track by spring or weights, which may be the weight of the vehicle, and which may be released by hand or a centrifugal device, the arrangement being such that substantially equal pressures are applied to the shoes irrespective of unevenness of the track. Brake shoes 21 mounted on levers 19 on shafts 15, 16 are applied by weighted levers 24 normally held released by the stepped portions of an arm 28 the end of which is engaged between a pin 31 and a vertically slidable member 35 both mounted on a bar 34 longitudinally slidable of the vehicle. The bar 34 is normally held in the position shown by a lever 52 having a notch 45 engaging the edge of an aperture in the end of the vehicle. When the lever 52 is released a spring 41 moves the bar 34 to the left turning the arms 28 about the pivots 29 and releasing the weighted levers 24 to apply the brakes. The lever 52 may be released by a stirrup 47 operated by a hand lever or a bell-crank 62 operated by a centrifugal device driven from the vehicle wheels and comprising a member 58 mounted in a radial groove in a drum 53. In a modification applied by the weight of the vehicle, the vehicle body is vertically movable on the wheel axles and carries brakes fixed to it. The vehicle body is normally held raised by levers having rollers engaging the tops of the axle boxes which are adapted to. be released by the longitudinally movable bar 34. The brake shoes are vertically slidable against springs. In a further modification where the brakes are applied by the weight of the vehicle the axle boxes are mounted on horizontal levers connected by link and lever to toothed gearing normally held by a pawl adapted to be released by the bar 34.
