Abstract

Hand actuation. - Mechanism whereby the angular movement given to the hand-lever of a railway vehicle brake imparts a greater angular movement to the brake shaft upon which the lever is mounted comprises in one construction a cam 9 pivoted at 8 to the hand-lever 3 which is freely mounted upon the brake.shaft 2, the cam being connected by a link 10 to the hanger 13 and bearing upon a shcrt lever 6 keyed to the shaft 2. The arrangemer.t is such that as the lever 3 is depressed to apply the brakes, the cam in addition to such movement is turned upon the pivot 8 and imparts an increased angular movement to the lever 6. The can 9 may be connected to the link 10 by a spring or a spring may replace the link so that, according to the Provisional Specification, when the brake blocks are in contact with the wheels the pressure is applied directly through the hand lever. The shaft 2 has keyed thereon levers 1 to which the brake blocks are connected by links. In another construction, a bell-crank lever pivoted at 16, Fig. 4, upon the hand lever 3 is connected by a link 17 to the vehicle framing and by a link 21 to a wedge-shaped member 25 disposed between the lever 3 and a projection 24 on the lever 6. The member 25 is thus drawn to the right when the lever 3 is depressed so as to impart additional movement to the lever 6.
