Abstract

Controlling-apparatus, arrangements of transmission gear in conjunction with.-In steering- wheel brakes of the kind in which the actuating means for the brake shoes are adapted to turn upon or with the pin carrying the stub axles on which the wheels turn, the actuating members of the levers or cams for expanding the shoes are pivotally mounted on the axle of the steering gear, so that the axis of the pivot passes through and is at right angles to the axis of the steering- axle. As shown in Fig. 1, a small cap or plate 2 fixed to the steering-axle is provided with lugs in which is journaled a shaft 3 pivotally carrying the operating-lever 4. This lever controls the arm 5 of the cam 6 by means of a connecting-rod 8 pivoted on the lever 4 by means of a ball joint 9. the lever 4 being actuated by a rod 10 having a pivoted joint 11 and a swivel cap 12 so as to allow for vertical and horizontal play in the brake actuating-gear. In a modification, the rod 4 is integral with a second lever connected to the rod 8 by a ball joint. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the plate 2 is integral with the steering- collar 14 with which it rotates, and carries fingers 4, 13 connected respectively to the rods 8, 10. The rod 10 may be replaced by wire actuating-means, in which case the rod 4 is normally held vertical by a spring, and when the member 15, Fig. 1, carrying the brake shoes and cam shaft is vertical, the cam may be mounted at the end of the shaft 3, a ball joint being provided on the latter if necessary.
