Abstract

347,719. Brake transmitting mechanism. ROCKWELL, E. A. and EVANS, E. R., 1725, Diversey Parkway, Chicago, U.S.A. Oct. 29, 1929, No. 8072/31. Convention date, May 29, 1929. Divided on 346,015. [Class 103 (i).] Transmitting-mechanism whereby greater pressure is applied to the front brakes of a vehicle than to the rear brakes comprises a lever 69 having arms of equal length that are connected respectively by pull rods 61, 64 to the levers 63, 66 of the cams or equivalent of the brakes. The lever 66 is longer than the lever 63 so that with a given turning movement of the lever 69 the lever 66 and its cam receives a smaller turning movement than the lever 63 and its cam, a greater pressure being thus applied to the front brakes. The lever 69 may be actuated from a power device by a lever engaging one arm 74 of an angle lever freely mounted on the shaft 67 of the lever 69, the other arm 72 of the angle lever contacting with an arm 71 of the lever 69 as described in Specification 346,015. The power device may be of the kind in which power is derived from the power shaft of the vehicle, and which thus has itself a braking action on the rear wheels. An emergency pull-rod 79 is connected to the lever 69 in line with the pull rod 64 whereby all the brakes may be applied and also permits application of the rear brakes in the event of breakage of the connections to the front brakes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes a modification in which the cam levers of the brakes are of equal length and the increased turning movement of the front brake cams is obtained by making the corresponding arm of the lever 69 shorter than that to which the pull rod of the rear brakes is connected. In a further modification the hole through the lever 69 for the shaft 67 is elliptical in shape so that the lever is free to float and an equalized pull is given to the rods 61, 64 but the cam lever of the front brakes is longer than that of the rear brakes, resulting in the application of greater pressure to the front brakes. Further in this arrangement the point of contact between the arms 71, 72 is above the plane passing through the axis of the shaft 67 normal to the longitudinal plane of the arms of the lever 69. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
