Abstract
395,461. Steering - wheel brakes. NORRIS, H. G., 11, Smarts Buildings, High Holborn, London. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 9199. [Class 103 (i).] In operating mechanism for front wheel brakes of automobiles wherein the brake is applied by a rocking lever actuated by a member which is moved along the axis of the steering pivot of the wheel, the lever is so connected as to permit the point of contact between it and the member to remain in the steering axis. The part 7 integral with the fixed front axle 2 of the vehicle and in which the steering pivot is mounted has secured thereto a member 26 provided with cam surfaces 25 with which co-operates a cam member 22 having an arm 27 connected to an operating rod 28. The member 22 turns about an axis in line with that of the steering pivot of the wheel and engages through a screwed pin 19 seated in a cavity in the member 22, a lever 17 which is connected at one end by a link 16 to the cam lever 15 of the brake and at the other end is anchored by a link 29 to the arm 13 on the swivelling wheel axle to which the steering track bar 14 is connected. Thus the cam member 22 when turned rises and rocks the levers 17, 15 to apply the brake. By reason of the link connection 29 the lever 17 can move in a manner to allow the point of contact between the pin 19 and the member 22 to be maintained in the axis of the steering pivot so that there is no interference between the movement of the brake mechanism and that of the wheel.
