Abstract

337,411. Burney, Sir C. D. July 26, 1929. Deflectable axle-ends and intermediate connections therefor; non-reactive steering-mechanism for separately-pivoted wheels. - In a vehicle in which the front and rear wheels are steered the steering gear is such that the front wheels move through a small angle before any steering movement is imparted to the rear wheels. In the construction shown the steering gear comprises a cam groove 2 having one part actuating the. front wheels and another part 19 actuating the rear wheels, the central portion of the part 19 being straight so that while the pin or roller 20 travels over this portion no movement is imparted to the rear wheels. The front wheels are mounted on stub axles 10<a> connected by links 8 to arms 7 on a vertical shaft 6 the upper end of which carries an arm 5 connected by a link 4 and arm 3 to the cam 2. The rear wheels are steered by a link 10 and linkage similar to that used for the front wheels. According to the Provisional Specification the front wheels are steered by two longitudinal drag links connected to bell crank levers which are coupled together by a track-rod, one of the bell-cranks being operated by the usual steering gear. The track-rod operates a shaft having a cam groove formed with a straight central portion, and the rear wheels are steered by means of the cam, so that when the straight portion of the cam is in action the front wheels can be steered without steering the rear wheels.
