Locking by positive and frictional detents.-In a hand-truck or trolley of the type which normally runs on a single lateral wheel base and is provided with means for restraining the wheels from rotation, the locking-means, which preferably act in one direction of rotation only and with which a brake may be incorporated, comprises a pawl-and-ratchet clutch which mav be actuated to lock the wheels when the truck-body is in a raised position. In the form shown, the pawl 14, Figs. 1 and' 7, the outer face of which constitutes a brake surface, is drawn into engagement with a ratchet wheel 15 carried by the wheel by means of a spring 16, but its engagement is normally prevented by the interposition of a lug 24 between the leg 29 and the hand-lever 22, the latter being connected to the pawl by a cable 21, passing through the member 9, to levers 17, 18. When the lug 24 is depressed against the action of a spring 25 the pawl engages the ratchet wheel to prevent rearward movement of the wheels, and when the lever 22 is raised to free the pawl the, lug 24 automatically resumes its position, whilst further raising of the lever applies the pawl to the inner surface of the wheel flange to act as a friction brake. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the wheels may be carried by plates 11 oscillating about an axis 12 against the resistance of springs 13, in which case the pawl 14 for each wheel is pivoted to one of the plates, and the cable 21 passes into the tube 9 near the axis 12, so that its function is not affected by the suspension system. Grappling members provided with spikes or hooks to engage the load may be coupled to a chain 27 which passes over the load and is anchored to a hook 28.
