Abstract

920,432. Disc brakes. A. T. BURNS. Oct. 10, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 35328/60. Class 103(1). [Also in Group XXXII] A vehicle chassis has wheels 4 on axles 5 in frame members 3 secured to the chassis, brake discs 31 secured to the wheels, brake pads 29, levers 18 coupled to the pads 29, a wedge member 16 for spreading the levers 18 apart to press the pads against the discs, and a rod 11 displaceable longitudinally on the chassis for operating the wedge member. As shown, pivotal movement of the levers 18 against springs (not shown) is transmitted by a rod 21 pivoted to the levers and carrying a spring 25, and a lever 22 pivoted in a bracket 26 to a rod 27 carrying the brake pad 29. A spring 30 acts to release the brake. The wheels may be displaceable laterally outwards against springs or the discs 31 may be flexible so that with increasing pressure of the pads 29 the discs 31 press against the plates 32 which are provided with brake linings. If preferred, the rods 21 may extend directly from the levers 18 to the rods 27. The wedge member 16 may be caused to move longitudinally by an hydraulic cylinder or alternatively by overrun when the chassis forms part of a trailer. In the latter case the towing force is transmitted through springs and the rod 11 carries a towing eye at its other end. A hand lever (not shown) may be provided to move the rod 11 longitudinally for manual application of the brakes.
