Abstract

321,815. Clark, D'A. M., (Bendix Brake Co.). Nov. 5, 1928. Force - transmitting mechanism; hand and foot actuation. - Fourwheel brakes for motor-vehicles are actuated through a pair of interconnected horizontal levers 26, 28, Fig. 1, pivoted at 30 on the side members 10 of the frame and extending across the frame, each lever being connected near its outer end by cables 32 to the two brakes 22 on that side, and the lever 28 being connected to a brake pedal 34 and the lever 26 to a hand lever 40, so that breakage of any member of the system does not put more than two brakes out of action. As shown in Fig. 1, the inner ends of the levers are connected by a pin and slot. Flexible conduits 44 for the operating cables 32 are secured at one end to brackets 46 on the frame members 10 and at the other end to brackets 48 on the axles 16, 18; each bracket 48, Fig. 4, having a part 50 rolled into cylindrical form to grip the conduit 44, and a plate portion 52 clamped to the axle by the device which clamps the spring 14. In a modification, the lever 28 is slightly behind the lever 26, to which it is connected on the centre line of the chassis by a rigid link. In another modification, Fig. 5, the levers 126, 128 are pivoted at 66, 68 on brackets on the cross frame member 12 and are connected near their ends to brake-operating cables 144. A slotted offset portion on the lever 128 is engaged by a projection on the lever 126.
