Abstract

324,310. Girling, A. H. G. April 23, 1929. Divided on 323,183. Force-transmitting mechanism.-A control-effort balancing device for use in connection with braking mechanism comprises a shaft B, Fig. 1, mounted on a pivot A and surrounded by a sleeve D which is provided at the end adjacent the pivot A with a primary lever E to which the effort is applied, and at the other end with a pair of secondary levers F1, extending in opposite directions, through which the effort is transmitted to the brake mechanism. A stop, e.g. as shown in broken lines, may extend from some fixed part to limit the swing of the shaft about the pivot. In modifications, either the primary lever or one of the secondary levers is situated at a point intermediate the ends of the sleeve and may be adjustable thereof. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the sleeve D carrying the primary lever E and secondary levers F1, F2 swings about the pivot A, the effort being applied to the lever E through a brake pedal J and a set screw which can be placed in any one of three holes P1, P2, P3 provided in the pedal. A slot in the supporting bracket K surrounds the sleeve D so that if a part connected to one pair of the brakes breaks, the sleeve D will abut against the end of the slot and continue to operate the remaining pair. When applied to a four wheel brake system, three devices as described above are employed, the first being fixed to the chassis and operated by the brake pedal and the secondary levers thereof being respectively connected to the primary levers of the second and third devices; the second and third devices are respectively mounted on the front and rear axles of the vehicle, the secondary levers being connected to the brakes by rods which are approximately parallel to the axles.
