Abstract

585,769. Projectile fuzes. HYDRAN PRODUCTS, Ltd., and MOTLEY, L. Nov. 15, 1944, No. 22603. [Class 9 (i)] A slow fuze train is started, for destroying the projectile after a given interval, by the rotation of a body of asymmetric weight about an axis transverse to the spinning axis of the projectile, in response to the spinning of the projectile. In the form shown, a cylinder 1 is mounted for rotation about the axis II-II at right angles to the spinning axis of the shell, and is normally held in " safe " position, in which the bores 2, 4 and 9, 10 are out of alignment, by a coiled spring. As the shell commences to spin, the asymmetry of weight of the cylinder causes it to rotate into the " armed " position shown, in which instantaneous trains in the bores 9 and 10 are in communication for normal detonation by a striker 7. At the same time the plunger 5 enters the bore 2 and the detonator 6 strikes the pin 3 and ignites a slow train running up a passage (not shown) in the plunger and eventually, through passage 20, joining the instantaneous train in the bore 9. The plunger 5 is normally pressed lightly on a flattened portion of the cylinder 1 by a weak spring 11 ; when the cylinder has rotated and the plunger commences to descend, the balls 15 slip out of their recesses in the body of the fuze and into the recess 16, so that the plunger and sleeve 14 are pressed down together by the powerful spring 12. It is stated that the asymmetry of weight of the cylinder results from the holes therein, but other means may be provided. According to the Provisional Specification, the pin 3 is movable in the cylinder and is normally held cocked against a spring by the rounded end of a rod engaging a V-shaped groove in its poriphery. The other end of the rod abuts against the fixed fuze body, but when the cylinder rotates into " armed " position the rod registers with a hole and enables the pin to move forward and strike a fixed detonator. In this form the main detonator is carried by the cylinder.
