Abstract

473,284. Projectile fuzes. SCHENK, E. H., and INDUSTRIAL COMMODITIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 6, 1936, No. 10146. Convention date, Aug. 27, 1935. [Class 9 (i)] A clockwork time fuze according to the invention comprises a rotary timing member 60 in one piece with the casing 21 of the clockwork and rotating therewith within the setting cap 4, and a release bolt 54 movable forward longitudinally and parallel to the axis of the fuze under the action of a spring 56 to release the striker when at the appointed time a notch 59 in the timing member comes opposite a lug 58 on the bolt. The forward movement of the release bolt allows a ball 51 to escape into a recess 55 in the bolt to release the striker 47. The friction between the setting cap 4 and the body 1 of the fuze is adjusted by three setscrews 40, only one shown, bearing on a friction ring 41. The clockwork casing 21 is keyed to the setting cap until the moment of discharge by means of balls 42. On discharge, the clockwork sets back and the balls escape into lateral holes 43. At the same time, a lead washer 61 formed with a tooth 62 normally blocking the notch 59 is empaled on spikes 63 on the body of the fuze. When acceleration is over, the lead washer remains behind while the clockwork is returned forward by the striker spring 46. The clockwork casing then rotates between ball bearings, one in front, not shown, and one 44 behind. The striker 47 fires a detonator 64 and the explosion is transmitted by a " booster " charge 65 to the main charge of the projectile.
