Abstract

582,508. Pyrophoric lighters. THEAKSTON, J. H. Jan. 28, 1944, No. 1593. [Class 75 (iii)] A cover 16 when slid in the direction x along the top of a petrol reservoir 1 exposes at an opening 19 the end of a wick 41 and two multitoothed pawls 7 pivoted to the cover engage ratchet pinions 8 on the shaft of an attrition disc or wheel 12 to turn the wheel to produce sparks at a spring-pressed cerium block 13 for igniting the wick. The cover 16 carries a flame extinguisher 6 and is connected to two spaced metal strips 5 running on a U-shaped wire 51 in grooves in extensions of the sides of the reservoir 1. The pawls 7 are held in contact with the pinions 8 by a torsion spring 9, the initial point of engagement being at a point near a line passing through the centres of the pawl pivot and shaft of the wheel 12.
