[Class 75 (iii).] A common operating member is provided for partially ejecting a cigarette and for releasing a spring-actuated ignition means for the lighter. The operating member is a knob whose axle projects into the case and is there formed with lugs 33; and when the knob is turned in an anti-clockwise direction, one of the lugs engages projections 35 on slides 21, 22 and moves the latter to the left. A turned-up flange 16 on the slide 21 serves to eject partially the topmost cigarette through an aperture 18 in the case. Towards the end of the movement of the slide, an incline 55 thereon engages and pushes up a stud 50 on a spring catch 47 and releases the hood 42 of the lighter, the hood then moving to the right under the action of two springs 43 in tubular housings. A pivoted hook 51 on the hood pressed by a spring towards the flint wheel 38 of the lighter engages a pin on the wheel and rotates it to produce a spark. The movement of the hood may be stopped by a pin, not shown, on the hood engaging the bracket carrying the flint wheel. If the lighter fails to ignite, the hood is reclosed and the operating knob turned until the lugs 33 slide past the projections 35, the slides then being returned to their normal position by a spring 24. Reverse movement of the operating member causes a lug 33 to engage the opposite face of the projections 35 and, owing to the lost motion connection between the slides afforded by pin and slot connections 28, the slide 22 will be moved to the right until a cam surface 56 thereon engages the stud 50 and releases the hood again. The slides are guided by an upstanding projection 23. The case and lighter are formed integral from a single metal stamping or pressing. According to the Provisional Specification, the slide moves in an arcuate path and is governed by two stops on either side of it, a spring being wound about the slide and abutting against the stops at one end and the turned up end of the slide at the other ; the lugs 33 engage the turned up end of the slide ; the lighter may be ignited by the reaction of the slide after it has ejected a cigarette ; and a pawl attached to the hood acts on a cog wheel on the spindle of the flint wheel.
