Abstract

724,448. Pyrophoric lighters. RONSON ART METAL WORKS, Inc. March 17, 1953 [April 9, 1952], No. 7308/53. Class 75 (3). The closure cap adapted to cover the wick-tube or gas-nozzle type of burner' in a pyrophoric lighter is loosely supported on an arm extension of a clutch member adapted to rotate the sparking wheel when the cap is lifted from the burner into an active lighting position. As shown in Fig. 2, the cap or snuffer 30 of a wick-tube burner 12 is located within an inverted box-like closure lever 13 pivoted about the shaft 24 of the spark wheel 21 and operated by depressing a finger piece 14 integral with a rack bar 22 which co-operates with a pinion wheel 23 projecting through a correspondingly tooth shaped aperture in the side of the closure lever so as to drive this lever. The cap 30 is loosely mounted in the slot 38, Fig. 7, in the bifurcated end of an arm 29 of a clutch member 26 by means of a head 40 larger than the slot-width and connected to the main cap portion 39 by a stem 41 located in the slot and of length greater than the slot depth so that the cap can tilt as well as move along the slot. The clutch member 26, preferably of resilient sheet metal is mounted on the shaft 24 between the side of the sparking wheel provided with clutch teeth and the pinion 23 and is provided with a pawl portion 35 for engaging the clutch teeth to rotate the sparking wheel 21 when the clutch member 26 is rotated clockwise in Fig. 2 (the pawl 35. riding over the teeth in the anti-clockwise rotation) and also with a positioning tongue 34 which presses against the inner wall of lever 13. The clutch member .26 is driven by the lever 13 by engaging the under side of the top wall of lever 13 with the portion 29 on one side of the shaft 24 and with the tab 37 on the other side of the shaft. The cap 30 is held in engagement with the burner 12 by pressure of spring 29 exerted through. the closure lever 13 on an annular shoulder 42 on the cap.
