Class 75(iii) A pyrophoric lighter using compressed gas has the manual operating device so connected to the delivery valve of the gas container and the ignition. means, such as a friction-wheel and flint or a catalytic or electric igniter, through, separate driving elements supported on a common axis (disc-cam and resilient-pawl disc respectively) that the valve is opened shortlybefore the ignition means come into operation and the valve operating means is-such that a link in the operating mechanism therefor can by longitudinal movement be disengaged from the valve and from the particular driving element supported' on the above common axis. A compressed-gas container. 25 carries on its top a, control valve 26 having. a stem terminating in a head 29 which when raised against spring, action allows escape of gas through a pin hole 30. The stem of the valve is engaged by the forked forward end of a lever 31, two rearwardly extending arms 31a, 31b of which carry outwardly extending pins 32a, 32b which normally rest in notches 35 at the ends of slots 34a, 34b in lugs 12a, 12b on top of the lighter, and also inwardly extending pins 33a, 33b which in the inoperative position of the lighter engage recesses 36 in the edges of cam discs 16a, 16b. The latter, connected by a bridge 16c, are rotatably mounted together with a flint wheel 14 and pawl disc 15 on a pin 13 extending between the lugs 12a, 12b, a straight upper edge of the pawl disc 15 being engaged by the bridge 16c so that the parts will rotate together. Radial slots 21 in the cam discs 16a, 16b are engaged by pins 22a, 22b on arms 20a, 20b of a thumb piece 20. Depression of the thumb piece against spring action results in the pins 22a, 22b rotating the cam discs clockwise, viewing Fig. 4, so that the pins 33a, 33b are pushed down and the valve 26 is opened by the lever 31; the pawl disc 15 is also rotated but entrainment of the flint wheel 14 is delayed until a pawl tooth 15a of the disc engages one of the relatively widely spaced teeth of the flint wheel, by which time gas is escaping from the pin hole 30. To permit removal of the gas container through the bottom of the lighter, the lever 31 is disengaged from the valve 26 by raising it and sliding it backwards, the pins 32a, 32b being lifted from the notches 35 and sliding back along the slots 34a, 34b.
